Join me for a series on Quiet Time With God
Inside: There are so many benefits of spending quiet time with God. Quiet your heart and meditate on Scripture so you can really grow in your faith. As you spend daily quiet time with God, your faith will be strengthened. There are more benefits than you may realize.
When we speak in terms of spending time with God, I’m not necessarily sure that benefits is the right word to use. Even still, spending time with God does have perks, if you will. Spend quiet time with God on a regular basis, if not daily, and your life will change.
Scripture has a way of transforming hearts. That’s exciting! And motivating!
Although there are many benefits, here are just a few to encourage and inspire you to have a regular quiet time with God.
The Benefits of Quiet Time With God
God is Honored
Spending quiet time with God doesn’t just benefit you. God takes pleasure when we spend time in the Word and fellowship with Him in prayer.
Psalm 147:11 says, “but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who hope in His steadfast love.” (ESV)
To me, it’s pretty amazing that the God of the universe should care enough about me and my actions that it brings Him joy.
FREE For You: The Quiet Time Cheat Sheet!!
The Quiet Time Cheat Sheet is for you:
Even if you only have 10 minutes a day
Regardless of your Bible knowledge - no Bible knowledge necessary
Especially if you've tried other Bible study methods and failed before
That makes spending time with God even more amazing, despite the benefits I receive when I set aside time to be with Him.
Your Trust in God Grows
You can’t trust God unless you know Him.
The only way to truly know Him is by spending time in the Word and really basking in who God is. As you see His faithfulness demonstrated through Scripture, you can remember that you serve the same God.
He is faithful.
By recounting His steadfast love, your own faith will grow!
I don’t know about you, but if that’s only one of the befits of a quiet time with God, that’s enough for me!
You Get to Know God Better
Similarly, as you spend time with the Lord each day, you’ll start to see the pattern of His personality show itself.
See how God provided food for the Israelites even as they weren’t the most obedient children?
He can do the same for you.
Time and time again, throughout Biblical history, God shows His character. As you read and spend time in God’s Word, you’ll begin to know Him better.
Ultimately, you’ll see God’s character shine through as He sent His Son as the ultimate sacrifice for sin. (John 3:16)
You Will Become More Christ-Like
The more time you spend with someone, the more like them you will become.
The same is true of God.
As you saturate yourself with Scripture, you will become more Christ-like. Model Christ’s example of love an humility as you seek after Him. Everyday you’ll be changed more into His image.
The thought of that makes spending quiet time with God very exciting!
God Will Reveal Areas In Which You Need to Grow
Scripture is like a mirror that gives us a reflection of our hearts.
God uses Scripture to pierce to the soul (Hebrews 4:12) and in doing so, will reveal areas in your life that need spiritual growth or change.
- Is there a sin you need to repent of?
- Or someone you need to seek forgiveness from?
- Do you struggle with an ongoing sin that defines you?
- Or even a sin that just creeps up every now and again?
Spend quiet time with God and let the Holy Spirit do His work in your heart. That’s one of the great benefits of spending quiet time with God!
Sinful Behaviors Will be Changed
When You spend time with Christ, savoring His Word, you can’t help but change your behavior.
It’s almost impossible not to be transformed!
Christ didn’t only die for your salvation. He died so you could live a changed life.
We all have sin we struggle with, but as we spend time with God, He keeps changing us. Transforming us. Conforming us to His image. (Romans 8:28-29)
That can only happen as we immerse ourselves in the Word, by spending quiet time with Him.
You Will be Spiritually Recharged
This world is a scary place. You don’t have to look far to see catastrophe, sin, anguish, struggle, chaos, and a whole plethora of evil.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV)
He knew that if we didn’t fill ourselves up with time in the Word, we couldn’t handle the daily struggles that threaten to burden us.
You can’t make it on your own.
You need Jesus to refresh and recharge you.
Drink from the springs of Living Water. (John 7:38).
Refresh your soul by drawing close to God. As you do, you will be spiritually recharged.
You may not be able to solve the world’s problems, or even your own, but you will have the grace, peace, and encouragement to be a testimony of God’s love to the dying world.
Spend quiet time with God and you will be renewed.
You Will Develop Your Prayer Life
There are somethings that just get better with practice.
Prayer is one of them.
At first you may feel awkward, not knowing exactly what to say or do. As you practice prayer through having a quiet time with God, you’ll begin to develop your prayer life effortlessly.
The more time you spend in communion with God, the more your prayer life will grow.
Your Life Will be Transformed
Simply put, your life will change.
That’s one of the best and greatest benefits of spending a quiet time with God. You won’t be the same person a year from now if you continue to seek God through spending quiet time in His Word.
The transformation that takes place when God changes your heart is unlike anything you’ll ever experience.
That can only happen by spending time with God through Bible reading and prayer.
Want the Benefits of Quiet Time With God, But You’re Not Sure Where to Start?
Maybe you agree with everything I’m saying, but you aren’t sure where to begin.
That’s totally OK!
We all have to start somewhere!
To begin, I suggest reading, 5 Ways to Have an Effective Quiet Time.
I also recommend getting yourself a good Bible that you enjoy reading from (i.e. the print is to your liking, the version is one you understand and like, the size is comfortable, etc.)
I highly recommend this Bible. In fact, it’s the exact one I use! 🙂
Next, I prefer a good notebook and pen for taking notes or writing Scripture. I don’t mind splurging a bit and making my pen and notebook a little more fancy and enjoyable to write with for this occasion. It’s just a little extra special touch.
And finally, this book of puritan prayers just adds an extra touch for reflection. I think it’s always best to pray what’s on your heart, but reading the prayers of the Puritans can help spark some thoughts in your own heart.
Don’t Shoot for Perfection
As a final note, please let me caution you:
Your time with the Lord will look different than mine and it also may look different on a daily basis.
Please let go of the idea of perfect. To really reap the benefits of a quiet time with God, it’s most important that you spend time in His Word, with no pressure to do it perfectly.
God wants your heart, your time, and your sacrifice of praise (Hebrews 13:15).
Not your perfection!
The benefits will come and so will the technique. For now, just start spending a quiet time with God and let Him do the work!
