How to Quiet Your Mind to Hear God

Have you ever wondered why God doesn’t just come into your presence with an audible voice and tell you what He wants? Do you ever wonder what the benefits of spending quiet time with God are?

I know I have!

Sometimes I’ve wished God would speak to me from a burning bush and there would be no wondering.

No discerning.

God doesn’t work that way anymore. While He doesn’t speak audibly, He has given us His Word, the Bible, and has promised us that it’s all we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3).

FREE For You: The Quiet Time Cheat Sheet!!

The Quiet Time Cheat Sheet is for you:

  • Even if you only have 10 minutes a day

  • Regardless of your Bible knowledge - no Bible knowledge necessary

  • Especially  if you've tried other Bible study methods and failed before

The trouble is, we live in a society that makes it difficult to stop and meditate on the Word so that we can hear God.

God said,

“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10a (ESV)

But how do you do that? How do you quiet your mind so you can hear God?

Although we live in an society that never slows down, finding time to spend with God isn’t really as hard as you might think.

It’s really just a matter of changing up your priorities.

Unplug for a While

It sounds simple and the results are fantastic, but can you unplug? Does it feel that if you step away from your smartphone for an hour or so, the world might fall apart?

This is a different time that we live in. There has never been another time in history where our availability to those around us is so high.

People have access to you by way of many different avenues, and sometimes you need to unplug.

Don’t get me wrong.

I love the ability to connect with childhood friends, see my nieces and nephews in real time, and catch up with those closest to me.

But I have to have a time when I’m unavailable, and so do you.

If you unplug for a set amount of time each day, you will begin to quiet your mind to hear God. Put your phone on airplane mode and let it sit while you dwell in the presence of the Creator.

The benefits of quiet time will be worth it.

I promise you the world won’t fall off its axis if people can’t reach you for a little while!

Relax and Unwind

Similarly, as you unplug, you also need to learn the art of relaxing.

I’ve become so accustomed to needing to think about something, that I’ve forgotten that silence and meditation are spiritual disciplines.

The other day, after I had a rough morning, my sweet kids drew me a bubble bath, turned on some soothing instrumental praise music, made me some tea, and said,

“Mommy, you relax.”

The big kids said they would take care of the littles. My only command was to take a load off and relax.

I was overwhelmed and overjoyed! It was precisely what my soul needed. I sat back in the tub with my eyes closed, and I meditated on God’s goodness.

I let my heart and mind drift into thinking about the promises of God and all He has done for me.

My soul praised Him as I recounted His provision for my family.

I thanked Him for saving me.

I would have never had this sweet fellowship with God if I hadn’t relaxed and truly quieted my mind to hear Him.

Play Praise Music

Praise music does wonders for my soul. It helps me focus my mind on God and His greatness.

Have you ever been thoroughly discouraged and feeling as if you couldn’t hear God at all? Try turning on quality praise music and agree with who God is.

Whenever I do this, I’m always amazed at how my attitude changes, and I begin to hear God again.

Playing praise music helps me to be aware of His presence and tune out the rest of the noise of this world.

It helps me quiet my mind to hear Him.

Have You Tired Absolute Quiet?

As you may have guessed, I don’t do “quiet” well! I’m a communicator and thrive on having something going on at all times. I like to have my mind active, always planning and thinking.

Absolute quiet scares me.

But sometimes absolute quiet is exactly what I need in order to hear God.

Get away to a still, quiet place and just think about God. Train your mind to focus on Him. In the absolute quiet, where distractions are at bay, you can listen and hear God’s still small voice through His Word.

Carve Out a Time

Sometimes all it takes is intentionality. Sounds easy enough, right? Be intentional about finding a time to spend with God.

You might say you have a lot on your plate, or you’re super busy and just can’t find the time. (By the way, listen to this acronym: BUSY – Being Under Satan’s Yoke. Something to think about!)

Allow me to say that we find the time to do the things that are most important to us. I’ve never been too busy to go days on end without eating, nor do I neglect to take care of myself.

Why? Because it’s important.

Therefore, consider your priorities and act accordingly.

I promise you that if you make the time to spend with God, you will hear Him speak to you as you read His Word.

Meditate on Scripture

Since we know that God speaks through His Word, then it makes sense to meditate on Scripture. If you truly want to hear Him speak, there’s no better way, than to read His inspired Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

I can’t encourage Scripture meditation enough, as God’s Word doesn’t return void (Isaiah 55:11). My favorite way to meditate on Scripture is by reading a verse and accentuating a different word each time through.

  • I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 (ESV)
  • I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 (ESV)
  • I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 (ESV)

And so on. Each time you accentuate a different word, meditate on it and ponder what that word means concerning the verse and your heart.

When you meditate on Scripture, you will hear the voice of God speak to you through His Word.

Ask God to Help You Hear Him

Simple enough, right? If you really want to hear God speak to you, then just ask Him. (James 1:5) He loves you, and He understands you.

Ask Him to show Himself to you and then listen as He answers. Some of my greatest and most intimate moments with God have been when I’ve cried out to Him and asked Him to reveal Himself to me.

The blessings are amazing! Would you consider asking Him to make Himself known to you?

Prepare a Place to Have Quiet Time

I’ve heard many thoughts on this. First, let me say that I don’t believe you need to have the perfect place to have a quiet time. I do think, though, that it would be super awesome to have a War Room dedicated to prayer and quiet time.

Therefore, it’s not so important that you have a special place to seek the Lord. Having said that, preparing a place, as informal as that may be, will help you feel intentional about spending time with God.

It doesn’t have to be fancy. A special chair, tucked away in a corner, with a small table and lamp. Some tea or coffee (or your beverage of choice) and a notebook and pen.

Gather your supplies. You can probably find them lying around your house. If necessary, shop at a thrift store to save some money.

Once you’re set up, then it’s just a matter of actually spending quiet time with God, in your special place, of course!
