I have tried just about every option out there for memorizing Scripture. I have a desire to hide God’s Word in my heart, and to teach my kids to do the same. But for some reason, the act of memorizing Scripture, can be very difficult. Although I really desire to commit the Bible to memory, I struggle.
And I have a sneaking suspicion that I’m not the only one!
Before I teach you my all time favorite Scripture memory hack, I’d encourage you to read (affiliate) The Well Versed Family: Raising Kids of Faith Through Scripture Memory (Note: It’s only available in the Kindle Version.) It will remind you of the importance of teaching your kids to memorize God’s Word.
There are many tools available to help you memorize Scripture, and we can talk about that another time. But for now, I want to share with you my all time favorite Scripture memory hack. (You’ll be so thankful you learned it. It’s that easy!)
It’s quick, efficient, and doesn’t cost a dime. And it works every time!
You’ll simply need to pick a verse that you want to memorize. This is a great list to start with.
For example, if you wanted to memorize Psalm 119:9-11, the front of your 3 x 5 card would look like this:
How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 (ESV)
Now flip your 3 x 5 card over and write the first letter of every word. Be sure to pay careful attention to write the proper punctuation and capitalization as well. (This will help trigger your brain and give you mental cues.)
The back of your 3 x 5 card would look like this:
H c a y m k h w p?
B g i a t y w.
W m w h I s y;
L m n w f y c!
I h s u y w i m h,
t i m n s a y. P 119:11
(Boy, my spell checker had a field day with that one! It kinda looks like you’re writing Greek!)
Here is The Easiest Way to Memorize Scripture – Ever!
Simply look at the letters that represent each word. Then say the verse out loud several times using the letters as a prompt. You can practice line-by-line, or verse-by-verse, whichever you prefer.
Seeing the letters will help your brain remember the words.
Eventually, you can start trying to say the verse while looking away for small amounts of time. Make the time between looking longer each time until eventually you don’t need to look at the card at all.
If you have to glance, do it quickly.
You will be amazed at how this simple little hack will help you memorize scripture quickly and efficiently!
It Works for Any Age
This method is awesome for anyone who can read. It doesn’t matter how old or young. Actually, sometimes we adults need a little extra help memorizing. This hack will work for you!
Our kids use this to memorize their verses for our church’s Kids 4 Truth program.
We also incorporate it as part of our kids Quiet Time. It works amazingly well!
I’m amazed at how diverse this system is. And how crazy, easy it is!
Try it for yourself and see what you think! Grab your 3 x 5 cards a pencil, and your favorite Bible verse and start practicing right away! Memorizing Scripture is one of the greatest spiritual disciplines you can exercise!
For a little extra fun, why not issue a challenge with your kids to see how many verses you can memorize in a day, or a week? Have fun with it! You can’t go wrong hiding God’s Word in your heart!
